Josef Abraham Shalom Josef, Philanthropist
Note on Abraham Shalom Josef
By Daniel Reiser
Josef Abraham Shalom Josef from Calcutta (1833-1911) was a big donor to institutions in the land of Israel. He built the first hospital in Jerusalem - Misgav Ladach משגב לדך (1900) and in Hebron בית הדסה (1909). After his death, The Greatest Sefaradi Yeshiva (until today) - Porat Josef - was built by his children in the old city of Jerusalem just beside the steps going down to the Kotel. He already bought the land before he died and the Yeshiva bears his name until today (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porat_Yosef_Yeshiva and his full name in the Hebrew page)
When he died all the great rabbis of Jerusalem made a eulogy ceremony and the eulogies were printed under the name "Josef Eineno" - יוסף איננו - "Jossef is no more".
Also found in Kever Rachel- Rachel's Tomb - in Beth Lechem - this dedication from the end of the 19th century (no specific date) - To David Sasson of Bombay and to [Josef] Abraham Shalom for subsidizing renovations to this holy site.
