Joseph Abraham Shalome Joseph, Philanthropist (1883-1911)
Hailed as the "most precious person," the "builder of Jerusalem", by Daniel Reisner, Josef Abraham Shalome Josef, donated the first hospital in Jerusalem in 1911, and in 1909 he built a hospital in Hebron, the Beit Hadasah. He also bought land next to the kotel, "the Wailing Wall," to build a yeshiva. His sons built the Yeshiva in his memory - the Porat Joseph Yeshiva where the Chief Rabbis of Israel study. When he passed away the chief rabbis of Israel sang eulogies for him which are printed in a booklet. His grave lies in the Jewish cemetery in Calcutta.
