11 Social and Cultural Life
The Jewish community had a rich social and cultural life in Calcutta. This exhibit features some of the most cherished Jewish outings and pastimes, as well as memories of their favourite vacation spots. It includes references to the Judean Club which was an important part of Jewish community life in the Twentieth century. The community established schools for Jewish children, charities as well other social infrastructure. The Jewish life was very active until 1970s when most of the community had emigrated.
The most popular vacation spots were Darjeeling, a hill station in Himalayas, Gopalpur - a sea resort in today's Odisha, as well as suburban getaways such as Riverside on Hooghly River.
